About Duac

The Duac Gel contains the antibiotic clindamycin and the exfoliating agent benzoyl peroxide. Both of these ingredients reduce bacteria associated with acne and in addition benzoyl peroxide helps to unblock pores and reduce whites and pimples. Duac is therefore likely to reduce spots, infection and inflammation.

Duac is a useful Double-Action second-action treatment for acne that does not respond on its own to antibiotics or exfoliating agents.

Duac is applied once a day. The amount of gel with one finger will cover the entire face.

Side effects of Duac

The most common side effect is redness and pain, especially in the first weeks of treatment. This is mainly due to the component of benzoyl peroxide, which is a mild irritant. If the inflammation is intense and persistent, Duac should be applied less often or even stopped. If there is a pronounced reaction, treatment should be stopped immediately.

Duac contains an antibiotic and therefore should not normally be used with other acne treatments that contain antibiotics. A small amount of antibiotic is absorbed through the skin and has the potential to cause intestinal upset, although this is unlikely.

Duac makes the skin more sensitive than sunlight. It is recommended to protect from the sun, hats and sun.

Pregnant and lactating women should not use Duac, although there is no known identified frequency of significant adverse reactions.

Excess gel can stain clothes and even bleach hair.

Duac is a local preparation. It should not be swallowed or applied to the lips. Accidental ingestion should be reported to a doctor immediately.

How to use

As with all acne treatments, Duac can take a while to work. Some improvement should be observed after about 5 weeks. If after 8 weeks there is no improvement, treatment should be discontinued.

Manufacturers recommend using for up to 12 weeks. Once the bacteria become resistant to the antibiotic component, clindamycin, the gel will become less effective.

Topical acne medications containing tretinoin, isotretinoin or tazarotene may become less effective than Duac and should not be used simultaneously.

Topical preparations containing antibiotics, such as Dalacin T or Zineryt, should not be used simultaneously. Similarly, creams, gels or lotions containing benzoyl peroxide should also not be used simultaneously.
