For women

Thrush in women is usually treated with pessaries (vaginal tablet) or cream inserted into the vagina, and creams applied to the skin around the entrance to the vagina. Pessary or vaginal cream can be a single dose or a daily dose for 3-6 days. The cream, used externally around the vaginal area, is usually applied 2-3 times a day for a week.

Alternatively, there is a single-dose antifungal capsule (Fluconazole / Diflucan 150mg) for the treatment of Thrush. This antifungal drug eliminates Thrush from the body, including Thrush in the vagina. This capsule treatment can be more effective, in some cases, than pessaries and creams. A capsule is less dirty to use. You can use capsules and creams and pessaries at the same time.

For men

Thrush in men is usually treated by applying a cream on the head of the penis 2-3 times a day for 10 to 14 days. Thrush in men can also be treated by taking the same one dose of antifungal capsule (Fluconazole 150mg) as that used to treat thrush in women.

More information about male Thrush and its treatment, see NHS thrush page.

Response to treatment

Symptoms of Thrush usually disappear completely within 10 days of starting treatment. Women who are prone to repeated episodes of Thrush often have to repeat the treatment every few weeks or months.

If the symptoms of Thrush have not resolved within 10 days, you should seek medical advice.

Do comrades need treatment for thrush?

Thrush is not a sexually transmitted disease in the sense that the yeast that causes the infection exists naturally and can explode without sexual contact. However, men and women can transmit the infection backwards and forwards from the penis to the vagina, with often only one partner having symptoms of Thrush.

For women who get regular thrush there is sometimes a benefit from simultaneous treatment of men. Similarly, in men who have irritation on the head of the penis caused by Thrush, simultaneous treatment of female partners can reduce relapse.

Warnings

  • If a diagnosis of Thrush has not been previously made, it is best to consult your doctor to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Symptoms that do not resolve within 10 days require investigation.
  • Pregnant women should not take Fluconazole capsules.
  • Thrush remedies do not treat sexually transmitted diseases. If there is a suspicion of a sexually transmitted disease, surveys are required.
